New York Times Bestseller

“A knockout collection. ... Sharp-edged satire deceptively wrapped like a box of Neuhaus chocolates, Table for Two is a winner.” —The New York Times

From the bestselling author of
The Lincoln Highway, A Gentleman in Moscow, and Rules of Civility, a richly detailed and sharply drawn collection of stories, including a novella featuring one of his most beloved characters

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood.

The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

In Towles’s novel
Rules of Civility, the indomitable Evelyn Ross leaves New York City in September 1938 with the intention of returning home to Indiana. But as her train pulls into Chicago, where her parents are waiting, she instead extends her ticket to Los Angeles. Told from seven points of view, “Eve in Hollywood” describes how Eve crafts a new future for herself—and others—in a noirish tale that takes us through the movie sets, bungalows, and dive bars of Los Angeles.

Written with his signature wit, humor, and sophistication,
Table for Two is another glittering addition to Towles’s canon of stylish and transporting fiction.

Nearly read the book straight through. Towles brings back the art of the short story. The book is divided into two. Six shorter tales comprise the first half. All are enjoyable, but they seem to improve as you go. My favorite was "Hasta Luego." The real gem, however, is the novella that comprises the book's second half. The story is set in Hollywood during the last days of 1938 and 1939, the characters torn straight from central casting as well as from real life including David O. Selznick and Olivia de Havilland. The writing is so vivid, colorful, fun, and immersive, you simply cannot put the book down. Better yet, it turns out to be a crackling mystery/caper. My only wish is that the novella were twice as long. It's time we all admit that Towles is one of the finest writers living today...in the States or anywhere else.

I love Amor Towles’ books. Such a variety of writing styles and all are great. I enjoyed each of these stories, and especially the last one! Good old fashioned gum-shoe and compelling to the end!

My god, is this guy good!

I would have been completely satisfied if this book had contained only the final 222 pages, a novel entitled Eve in Hollywood. But Towles blessed us with several novellas as well, giving us a total of 451 pages.

These "extras" are just as satisfying as the main event, and they're not short stories, not snippets or after-thoughts. (The first one, entitled "The Line," is brilliant.) Each novella is different in tone and style.

"Walking into" an Amor Towles' novel is like entering a grand ballroom in which you have the honor of being seated next to the smartest, cleverest person in the room. He's also the most interesting. His name is Amor Towles, and by the end of the evening, you'll be pleasantly drunk after feasting on his words.

Everything this man has written is exceptional. He's one of the top-five novelists writing today.

I am a fan of Towles for his wording- but this book, with, granted, remarkable wording, simply has too many characters and the plot was confusing.
Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024
This reviewer is a fan of Amor Towles and has read all of his novels. His collection of short stories is beautifully crafted with well defined characters and plot twists and turns that the reader will most likely not anticipate. The novella at the end of the collection, entitled Eve in Hollywood is less well crafted, less interesting and somewhat predictable. This reviewer would have preferred the collection without the final work and was tempted not to read it at all. Nonetheless the other stories are gems!

I have waited for Amor Towles's new book with eager anticipation and I have not been disappointed. Too many superlatives for his writing talent and ingenuity to list here, but it is a book I will read over and over again. For the final novella in the book (after 5 short stories that you wish would go on forever) I recommend you read the Rules of Civility first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful Towles - shame about the quality of the physical book though
Reviewed in France on May 12, 2024
I love Amor Towles. Just don't give this edition as a gift - honestly, publishers complain about Kindle but this more expensive paperback is so floppy, the paper so thin and the spine so brittle it is unlikely to last beyond the actual reading of it. Book lovers are in it for the whole package, between flimsy editions like this and monster 'trade' paperbacks, you'd be better off with Kindle.

If you love Amor Towles, you will love this collection. Get the Kindle edition.
